Adewale Maja-Pearce

Adewale Maja-Pearce was born in London, England in 1953 and grew up in Lagos, Nigeria. He holds a B.A. from the University College of Swansea, Wales and an M.A. from the School of Oriental and African Studies. He was editor of the Heinemann African Writers Series (1986-1994), and Africa editor of Index on Censorship (1987-1997), the London-based magazine of free expression.

His publications include Loyalties and Other Stories, In My Father's Country, How many miles to Babylon? Who’s Afraid of Wole Soyinka? A Mask Dancing, From Khaki to Agbada, Remembering Ken Saro-Wiwa and Other Essays, A Peculiar Tragedy, Counting the Cost and The House My Father Built. He has also edited The Heinemann Book of African Poetry in English, Wole Soyinka: An Appraisal, Christopher Okigbo: Collected Poems, The New Gong Book of New Nigerian Short Stories, and Dream Chasers: New Nigerian Stories.

He runs an editorial services agency and is a partner in The New Gong publishing. His essays and reviews have appeared in London Magazine, London Review of Books, New York Times, Virginia Quarterly and the Times Literary Supplement, amongst others.
